PIZ BUIN® History
It all started in 1938 with a mountain – and a man with a vision. Franz Greiter, a Swiss chemistry student and passionate mountaineering enthusiast, suffered overexposure to the sun while scaling the PIZ BUIN mountain. He took his experience and embraced nature’s challenge, inventing the first Sun Protection Product in 1946: a product that finally enabled anyone who shared the passion for living life in the sun to do so safely.
Together with his wife, Margo, a trained Beautician, Franz Greiter developed the glamorous brand that PIZ BUIN® has become today, always managing to capture the Zeitgeist*, through iconic imagery, contemporary packaging and products that have repeatedly proved to deliver unforgettable experiences. Evocative fragrances, sensual textures and great esthetics all distinguish the PIZ BUIN® experience, an experience that can only be described as inspiring and iconic.

Helioplex™ technology is a breakthrough sun protection technology developed by Johnson & Johnson. It offers photostable broadspectrum UVA and UVB protection and helps to achieve that PIZ BUIN® sunscreen complies with the latest European regulations.
Helioplex™ technology helps to protect from UVA and UVB radiation.
UVB rays - "burning rays" - harm the skin's surface and are the main cause of sunburn.
UVA rays – "aging rays" - penetrate deeper and damage collagen and elastin, which can result in premature skin aging and cancer.
Helioplex™ technology contains both UVA and UVB filters to protect against the sun and long term skin damage while also protecting against the more serious effects of UVA radiation. They cover most of the UVA / UVB spectrum offering broadband protection for your skin.
DHA or dihydroxyacetone is the key active ingredient in self tan products. Self-tanners react naturally with proteins in the outer layer of the skin via DHA. Products containing DHA produce a gradual tanning effect, starting within an hour of application and continuing over the next several hours. The result is a great-looking tan that is always temporary, because the outer layer of the skin continually renews itself. The resulting tan does not protect from sun exposure.

The plant Feverfew is a member of the "aster family" which grows in mountain scrub and rocky soil of the Balkan Peninsula. PIZ BUIN®’s parent company Johnson & Johnson has patented the use for skincare of Feverfew PFE™. This innovative extract is prepared by a new extraction process that keeps the active ingredients and eliminates unwanted components that could cause allergies.
How does Feverfew PFE™ help your skin? The Feverfew PFE™ plant extract, is a highly effective soothing and antioxidant ingredient. In laboratory testing, it has shown in vitro to exhibit greater antioxidant boosting activity than other leading extracts including sage, green tea, black tea, Boswellia Serrata, Olive Leaf, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Feverfew PFE™ plant extract, helps relieve redness of skin, helps repair skin cell’s DNA damaged by UV rays and strengthens skin cells resilience to the sun*. Its efficacy has been proven by several years of extensive research, performed by The PIZ BUIN® brand’s parent company Johnson & Johnson with several patents covering its applications in the cosmetic field.

PIZ BUIN® FAQ
Will using sunscreen stop me from getting a tan?
Quite the reverse is true. Although your skin changes colour more slowly when you're wearing sunscreen, the resulting tan will be better and longer-lasting, because the sunscreen will prevent your skin from burning and peeling. Some PIZ BUIN® products even contain special ingredients that stimulate the natural production and even distribution of tanning pigment in the skin.
How long does sunscreen last before it goes out of date?
It depends on whether or not the bottle has been opened. If it hasn't, there's no problem. All PIZ BUIN® products are tested according to the EU legislation and have a useful life span of more than 30 months. If your bottle has been opened for more than 12 months, you will need to purchase a new bottle.
Can I decrease the level of SPF as I spend more time in the sun? How fast?
You can decrease your protection level step by step during your holiday as soon as your skin has produced its own defence system: the tan. After a few days of effective protection, try moving from a high protection product to a medium one. But remember that people with a natural suntan also need to apply sunscreen, as a tan does not provide sufficient protection from UV exposure. Also bear in mind, that the SPF level you need largely depends on your skin phototype and the local UV intensity.
